Have you been physically or emotionally hurt due to a violent crime? If so, you may be entitled to financial assistance from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (CICB). The CICB is an administrative tribunal, which is governed by the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act. Both victims of violent crimes, as well as family members of deceased victims of violent crimes can be eligible. In all cases, the crime must have taken place in Ontario, but the victim does not have to be a resident of the Province of Ontario. Also, the CICB must receive the application for assistance within two years of the occurrence of the crime. Among the violent crimes that qualify, include:

If you were hurt as a result of a car accident, you may be entitled to benefits that will assist you during your recovery period. The provincial regulation of benefits is controlled by the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS). These benefits are standardized among insurance companies. Regardless of fault, the SABS can provide compensation to those injured in a car accident, if you, your passengers or pedestrians are injured. Any person who suffers from psychological/mental distress as the result of an accident involving loved ones is also eligible. It is recommended that you report any accident injuries to your insurance company within 7 days of the incident. Your insurance company will then request that you complete an Application for Benefits Form (OCF-1 Form). That form must be completed and sent back within 30 days, or you will have to provide a reasonable explanation as to why it could not be completed in the standard timeframe.
